Auburn Avenue was once called the richest Black street in America, home to thriving businesses, churches and civic life. Its nickname, Sweet Auburn, still fits.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park covers the heart of it, including the house where Dr. King was born and the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he and his father preached.

The King Center, founded by Coretta Scott King, sits nearby. Here you'll find the tomb of Dr. King and Mrs. King, set in a reflecting pool, along with exhibits on his life and the movement.

Check the National Park Service website before you go for hours and how to join a tour of the birth home, which is popular and limited in size.

Afterward, walk down to the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, a historic municipal market that has fed the neighborhood for generations.
